Hamlet – Plot Overview

Act 1

Prince Hamlet is informed by his father’s ghost that he was murdered by his uncle, King Claudius, who has since married Hamlet’s mother. The ghost urges Hamlet to seek vengeance, setting the stage for the rest of the play.

Act 2

As Hamlet feigns madness to investigate his father’s death, Polonius and others begin to suspect his erratic behavior is due to his love for Ophelia, Polonius’s daughter.

Act 3

Hamlet delivers his famous soliloquy, pondering life and death with the phrase “To be or not to be,” while questioning the morality of seeking revenge. He then stages a play to confirm Claudius’s guilt, and when the king reacts guiltily, Hamlet becomes resolved to kill him. However, in his attempt to confront Claudius, he mistakenly kills Polonius instead, further complicating matters. As a result, suspicions grow and tensions rise between the characters, setting the stage for the tragic events to come.

Act 4

After Polonius’s death, Ophelia goes mad and drowns, while Claudius sends Hamlet to England with a secret death warrant; Hamlet escapes, returns to Denmark, and learns of Ophelia’s death, setting the stage for the final confrontation.

Act 5

A tragic series of events unfolds during a duel between Hamlet and Polonius’s son, Laertes, leading to the deaths of Laertes, Claudius, Gertrude, and ultimately Hamlet himself, who finally exacts his revenge before dying.
