Hamlet- An Overview of a Musical Play

Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, William Shakespeare is best known for his poems, sonnets, plays, and one of the amazing and greatest writers the world has ever seen. He is also best known for his dramas and many other works. Even though he has penned down many plays and dramas that fall under comedies, histories, and problem plays, he is best known for his four tragedies, which are Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth. All his tragedies go through various elements before attaining the END. The elements in the play include a Tragic hero, the constant struggle between the good and evil, Hamartia, tragic waste, external and internal conflict, Catharsis, and supernatural elements. If a play consists of all these elements, the play is considered to be a tragic play. That said, we will see a brief description of Hamlet and how the play becomes musical. The play, Hamlet, is considered as one of the greatest play written by the author, Shakespeare, and is a number one powerful as well as influential work by the same. Hamlet is a revenge tragedy that is penned down in the form of a Roman Senecan tragedy. This play is also known to be popular even at present. Many theatre artists have taken the play and beautifully presented it on various stages. This play has inspired and drawn attention to various other playwrights and dramatists as well, and some of them are; Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, James Joyce, and Charles Dickens. The play, Hamlet, was a huge success story for the author as he had already attracted a lot of writers as well as drama players on to the stage.

Richard Barbarage played the first picturization of the drama. He is considered as the best tragedian of all during the Shakespearean time. The play Hamlet is divided into three parts, and three of them lead a significant message to the audience. The three parts of the play are; First Quarto, Second Quatro, and the First Folio. Known to be written in the 16th century, the Hamlet is a story where the son is on his way to avenge his father death, who was the King of Denmark, he was dead, and his ghost appeared before him asking his son, Hamlet, to avenge for his death. The ghost tells him that his uncle, present king, murdered his father. We see a killing plot made up by the Uncle despite fear and Hamlet on his way to suicide or murder his own uncle.

Any play can be made into musical, but when it comes to tragedy, the elements are difficult and must not interfere, giving the message to the audience. However, Hamlet came out as one of the best musical play. Hamlet, when it was pictured in the musical format, the theatre artists were a bit off, but the applause they got from the audience was overwhelming, making them sings along with the play. It is the magic Hamlet has protruded beyond the limit, tragedy. One of the notable ‘Hamlet- a musical version’ was acted out in the Richmond theatre.
